First Friday: May 2017 Character Limit

  • 5:00 pm–7:00 pm

FilmScene
118 E. College St., Iowa City

Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception at FilmScene! UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend, enjoy the work of local artists, and mingle with other art-enthusiasts.

This month we are featuring Jamie Boling, who makes work that captures and catalogues both penetrating and fugitive moments of his cultural experience. He is guided by the belief that the sensational can sometimes provide profound insights into human nature that lie beyond surface provocation. Boling's is an American daydream that embraces humor and often reveals dystopian visions of a media-saturated culture. Current events, images culled from the internet, publications, and other sources of cultural entertainment dominate his interests. Boling's process of collecting, isolating, re-contextualizing, and juxtaposing this imagery creates new meaning through modest acts of translation, synthesis, and re-presentation.

After earning a BFA from the University of Nebraska and MFA from the University of Iowa, Jamie Boling spent a year as a research Fellow at the Louvre in Paris, France, where he studied firsthand the great masterpieces of Western art. He has taught at some of top art programs in the country and continues to show his work nationally and internationally. His many years living and working in places like Paris, Berlin, and New York have allowed him to work with world-class galleries, museums, fashion designers, and filmmakers.

First Fridays are free and open to the public with complimentary popcorn and a cash bar.

Consider becoming a UIMA member! Courtesies include home delivery of the UIMA Magazine and a personalized Membership Card, which entitles you to free entry to the Figge Art Museum and reciprocal admission to other art museums around the country.
